The tycoons not only aim to battle each other in the ring but also strive to dominate the social media landscape by outshining one another. Musk’s supremacy on Twitter is being challenged as dissatisfied users seek alternative platforms. However, these alternatives face a significant drawback: they have limited userbases since they are relatively new. After all, nobody wants to share their thoughts in an echo chamber.
Introducing Zuckerberg’s Instagram Threads, the emerging contender could rival Twitter’s success. What sets Threads apart is its ability to leverage Instagram’s extensive and devoted user base of 2.35 billion individuals. With such a vast pool of potential users, Instagram Threads holds immense promise. As anticipation grows and the launch date approaches, let’s explore this app that has the potential to revolutionize the social media landscape.
What the Heck is Instagram Threads?
When initial information about the Threads app surfaced, the images displayed a user interface that bore a striking resemblance to the comment section of Instagram. Instagram aims to transform this comment section into an independent application, enabling users to initiate and participate in discussions on diverse subjects, much like Twitter. Threads will provide users with the ability to track hashtags, respond to posts, and communicate directly with other participants in the threads.
What will Instagram Threads be like?
Last month, Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, provided employees with an exclusive preview of the company’s upcoming alternative to Twitter. The new app, called Threads, will leverage Instagram’s account system, eliminating the need for users to fill out their information again. If you already have an Instagram account, you’re all set as your username and other details will be seamlessly transferred to the new app.
Previously referred to by the enigmatic codenames “Project 92” and “Barcelona,” Threads now has an official name. It’s important not to confuse it with the previous iteration of Threads that ceased operation in 2021.
During the meeting, Cox emphasized that Meta was attentive to the needs of creators and public figures who desire a platform that is well-managed. He further stated that Instagram Threads aims to provide a “safe, user-friendly, and dependable” environment, serving as a stable home for creators to cultivate and expand their audiences.
What are the Unique Features of Instagram Threads?
“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favourite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world,” reads the app’s description.
However, there are additional features and functionalities available on Threads. By examining the app’s screenshots, we can gather some insights. Similar to Instagram, you have the ability to express your appreciation through likes, comments, and direct messages on any post. Additionally, a new feature resembling Twitter’s retweet button enables you to share posts with others. Moreover, Threads improves upon Twitter by organizing replies into a tidy thread, facilitating easy tracking of conversations.
One notable distinction between Threads and Twitter lies in the length of your posts. Unlike Twitter’s character limit, Threads allows you to compose posts with up to 500 characters, nearly double the length. Furthermore, you can share updates with your followers and other creators in various formats such as photos, videos, and links, much like on Twitter.
Will Threads have a shot against Twitter?
Meta’s CEO is known for skillfully integrating features from different platforms into his own, a strategy that has proven successful. One noteworthy example is the Reels feature, introduced in 2020 as a direct competitor to the immensely popular TikTok app. With Instagram boasting a considerably larger user base than Twitter, Threads enjoys a competitive edge over other Twitter rivals, potentially even surpassing Twitter itself.
How private is Instagram Threads?
While Instagram Threads still faces some concerns, it is worth noting that the extensive permissions requested on the app’s App Store listing, such as access to “Financial Info” and “Sensitive Info,” have raised criticism among users. These requests can be viewed as a significant level of trust required for an app developed by Meta, previously known as Facebook, a company that has been involved in various scandals and controversies in the past.

The Launch Date
If you’re eagerly waiting to experience Instagram Threads, make sure to mark your calendar for July 6. This is the confirmed date for its official launch, as mentioned in the App Store listing. In an exciting move prior to the launch, Instagram has included a hidden surprise. Simply type “Threads” in the search bar, and you’ll notice a ticket icon. Tapping on it will grant you an invitation to the app and display a countdown to the highly anticipated day. Additionally, the Threads app has now created an Instagram account, which became active on Tuesday. However, at the time of writing, no posts have been made, and the account remains private.
